The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has many photographic attributes including its beautiful setting. The striking black-and-white spirals stand out starkly against a Carolina blue sky as well as the billowing white clouds and surrounding white sand and green grass. Here, the sentinel rests quietly in repose while sea oats add vertical artistic strokes against swirling stripes. Peaceful clouds comprise the backdrop. A combination a photographer cannot resist.

Each time I look at this photograph, I want to walk over that sand dune and watch the mighty Atlantic Ocean. This peaceful scene belies the darker side of the area’s personality that can pack a punch with hurricane-force winds and angry waters that have sunk hundreds of ships. I enjoy the contrast of this picture with the area’s moniker “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” If the area is a graveyard, then the lighthouse is standing in reverence wishing peace to those who met watery graves.
