This sunset with the buttermilk sky was photographed in north Mecklenburg County in 1961. This picture has several elements that I look for while photographing my surroundings: A big sky; a sunset; silhouetted people/objects; serenity; and, the contrast of light that leads the eye along the line of brightness to dark and back again. Many of us would speed right by a scene like this and never notice nature’s gifts in the form of memorable scenes. I look at this photograph today, decades hence, and I can still remember how I felt as I scanned the scene and lifted my camera.
The farmer was on his way to feed his animals at the end of a day. These farms have since been turned into subdivisions, and I wonder if I could ever find a scene like this today.
