Hammer Dulcimer

In farmhouses in the 1950s, both the music and stringed instruments were handmade. Hammer dulcimers were a tradition in many homes. The skill to play them was passed down from many generations of immigrants who brought their proud heritage to America.

The dulcimer is a percussion instrument similar to an autoharp except that the strings are struck with small wooden mallet-like hammers instead of plucked by fingers. One would be hard pressed to say exactly when the instrument was brought to North America because it or a variety of the dulcimer has been played for centuries literally all over the world. It became a fixture in North Carolina’s mountains and was used prominently in folk music. Today’s kids wouldn’t likely know what a dulcimer is or even the unique sound it produces. Its old-fashioned sound and the way it is produced are reminiscent of the state’s diversity and love for authentic music.
