I first photographed this lighthouse during the early 1960s and loved it so much that I am still photographing the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. I particularly like this picture because most people think of a lighthouse only when it is working at night and its light is on. But here, we see the tower doing its daytime job while wearing a bright red base and its famed black and white spirals. For seafarers on ships, the red stood out against foliage in the background and the stripes were visible for over 19 miles at sea against the sky. And there's no doubt that this well known lighthouse is a lovely piece of architecture and a joy to capture on film.
